Honoring a Pivotal Moment in American History

In early March of 1776, during the Revolutionary War, the Continental Marines carried out what is recognized as the first amphibious assault landing on foreign soil in American history. This bold military action helped shape the future of our nation and laid the foundation for modern amphibious operations.
Historical Background
On March 3–4, 1776, Continental Marines landed on the island of New Providence in the Bahamas, targeting Fort Montagu and Fort Nassau. The mission was part of a larger naval expedition led by Commander Esek Hopkins, which departed on February 17, 1776.
Why This Memorial Matters
Despite the significance of this historic event, the only known existing marker is a small plaque located in the Bahamas. Recognizing the importance of preserving and sharing this story, the Florida Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (FLSSAR) took the initiative to establish a permanent memorial here in the United States.
Why Pompano Beach?
Pompano Beach was selected as the memorial’s location because it is the closest logical point on the U.S. mainland to the original landing site in the Bahamas. The area welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, providing an ideal setting to educate the public and honor this milestone in American military history.
Partnership with the City of Pompano Beach
The City has worked closely with FLSSAR to turn this vision into reality. City leaders embraced the project early on and unanimously approved the installation of the memorial at the Fisher Family Pier, part of the city’s newly redeveloped Fishing Village.
A Landmark Setting
The memorial is located within one of Pompano Beach’s most visited and vibrant destinations, alongside:
- The Fisher Family Pier
- The 6-acre Fishing Village with dining, shopping, and a hotel
- Beautiful golden-sand beaches
- Live coral reefs for snorkeling and scuba diving
- Parks, water taxi access, and an open-air amphitheater
- Cultural and recreational attractions throughout the city
With nearly 1 million tourists visiting Pompano Beach annually, the memorial will serve as a lasting tribute and an educational opportunity for residents and visitors alike!
